A 1-day workshop

Learning to Train and Training for Learning

– in Auckland and elsewhere or online –

Are you ready to become a truly great environmental trainer?

It’s time to be confident that you’ve genuinely engaged the Heads, Hearts and Hands of your trainees.

It’s time for you to learn the tools of the trade.

The trade of professional trainers.

Yes – that’s right – the people all around the world who are specialists in the art and science of adult workforce learning.

These training experts have their own professional associations dedicated to best research and practice and they work with subject matter experts in all fields.

‘Subject matter experts’ is what professional trainers call people like us; people who are environment and sustainability professionals – it’s a polite way of saying that we’re not all naturally fabulous trainers!

I’ve been a member of my local Association of Training and Development for well over 20 years. I’ve learned from some of the world’s best trainers. For this workshop, I’ve pulled out some of the tips that have made the biggest difference to my own training, and tailored them specifically for environmental trainers.

Exceeded my expectations

Clare’s workshop exceeded my expectations. Clare was well organized and has a gift of encouraging her trainees. I left the workshop confident in myself as a trainer. The workshop brought together like-minded people and gave me the support I needed to set clear training objectives for my team.Elyse LaFace, Environmental Specialist

Ask yourself these questions to see if the 1-day Trainer workshop is for you:

Are you ready and willing to:

  • learn how adults learn – the neuroscience, peoples’ widely differing learning styles – and how to diversify your training skills to accommodate them?
  • understand and better manage the natural ebbs and flows of energy throughout any training session?
  • skilfully manage people you’re finding difficult?
  • give instructions for practical activities in such a clear way that people actually understand them?
  • structure practical activities in different ways so your trainees don’t get bored by a standard formula?
  • be confident that your trainees will head back to work with competence and confidence?

If you want your trainees to stay focused and fresh throughout your training, to practise their skills with you and back at work, and to be confident they have grasped the main points they need to know, then this is the workshop for you.

Who stands to benefit from this workshop?

This workshop is for environment and sustainability experts who:

  • love – or hate – delivering training, and who want to both love it and excel at it;
  • are interested in or already delivering training;
  • are keen to learn the best tips from the best professional trainers;
  • want time to prep and/or practise some of their training material; and
  • want to see their trainees head back to work with competence and confidence, to carry on learning in a supportive working environment.

Really valuable pre-workshop preparation

The workshop material included a pre-workshop exercise which really got me thinking about my role as a trainer and what I wanted to get out of the workshop. This was really valuable because it meant I showed up to the workshop already in the frame of mind to participate and get the most out of the day. Elyse LaFace, Environmental Specialist

Depending on your needs, this workshop can take the form of:

  • a 1-day public workshop with online follow-up
  • a 1-day workshop following by one or two half-day workshops where trainees deliver a key part of their training for kindly and constructive review; and/or
  • further evaluation of pilot and/or actual training sessions.

Here’s just some of what we’ll do during the Trainer workshop…

We’ll burgle some more tools from the professional trainers’ toolbox and practise using some of them. Over the course of the workshop and, where needed, in follow-up workshops, we’ll cover:

  • learning about training from the perspective of the professional trainer;
  • understanding your target audience using an avatar process;
  • preparing your training – context, content and process;
  • practising delivering your training;
  • evaluating the effectiveness of the training; and
  • supporting your trainees back in their workplace.

Stimulating learning environment

“Clare is an able and entertaining trainer who created a stimulating learning environment. Her lively personality soon had us all working together on practical tasks and learning from each other’s experience. I learned many important things about training that I will use.” Jan Crawford, New Zealand

Add One: Pre-workshop activity

Before the workshop I’ll ask you to bring along some training ideas to pilot or discuss during the workshop. There’s an option for everyone. You can bring an example of your environmental training materials, or, if you’re not there yet, bring the results of your research and preparation so far. Don’t worry if haven’t got much to show at this stage – I’ll include a pre-workshop questionnaire to kick-start your thinking.

Add Two: Mailing list

After this workshop you will want to keep learning from the best professional trainers out there! So at the end of the workshop you’ll have time to log in to the website of your local Association of Training and Development and subscribe to the mail list. That way you’ll get regular updates about upcoming training events and can choose which ones sound good to you. You’ll also get a short list of some great training newsletters to sign up to as well, with regular tips from the best trainers out there.

Add Three: Post-workshop activity

After the workshop you’ll receive follow-up materials to help you support your trainees and their supervisors embed new environmental training practices into routine work procedures. This will maximize the cost-effectiveness of your training in line with the 70:20:10 model.

Add Four: Online interactive webinar/meeting

It’s always difficult to take a day away from our usual work. You may find it harder still to take more time out to review your own training in light of this workshop. To help you follow up on your tasks and ideas, three or four weeks after the workshop I’ll host a 1-hour webinar where you can revisit the workshop content and your ‘to do’ list, hear from others how they’ve been going and ask questions.

Four add-ons that nearly double this workshop’s wrap-around value for you.
